From Failing to Thriving
There is nothing more heartbreaking than when a child doen't realize their gifts.
When I was in 4th grade they wanted to hold me back, I thought I was dumb. By highschool, I refused to go to school. I would sit on the train tracks smoking cigarettes. Of course, eventually, I got caught after failing all my classes.
Today I have two doctorate degrees. One in neuroscience, and the other in educational leadership.
I truly felt the school system failed me. We can do so much better. Don't let your child slip through the cracks.
Neuro Notes:
Learning is Self-Motivated.
Very literally, learning is inherently driven by the motivation networks in the brain. The ventral striatum, often called the "drug reward circuit" is the network that activates when we are learning. When we have that joyful Ah-Ha moment, it is activating this circuit.
What a shame that the schools have taken the joy out of learning.
